According to the Hollywood Reporter, Pacific Rim 2 is now off the table indefinitely at Universal Studios. This is sad, sad news. However there is a ray of hope. There is a rumor that Wanda, a Chinese conglomerate is looking to purchase Legendary Studios. As it turns out Pacific Rim did very well in China and if Wanda acquires Legendary Studios that may put a sequel back on the table.
Frankly, it wouldn’t be too disappointing to see Guillermo del Toro direct At The Mountains of Madness either. It’s a shame that got taken off the table too. The Fantastic Voyage has been done, twice. Once well and the second time–meh.
With two Godzilla movies slated to be released, one by Toho this year; along with a reboot of King Kong it seems like now is the perfect time to get the Pacific Rim sequel going. It would seem that the merchandising alone would make the series a bit desirable to studios. But what do I know.
And here’s a blu-ray combo pack that’s like a shotgun approach to collecting recently released science fiction movies: Pacific Rim, Gravity, Godzilla and Man of Steel. I can’t even make this stuff up: So if now isn’t the perfect time to make a Pacific Rim 2, I don’t know when will be.
